Alzheimer Societies across Ontario are committed to helping police officers understand Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
In this training, participants will learn the signs and symptoms of dementia, tips for engaging with a person living with dementia and their care partner, search techniques for a missing person living with dementia, situations police might be involved with a person living with dementia, and resources available across Ontario.
The following content is covered in the four modules:
- Module 1: Overview of Dementia – A basic understanding of dementia
- Module 2: Interaction Strategies – Strategies to use when interacting with a person living with dementia and care partners
- Module 3: Policing and Dementia – An overview of situations when you will likely be engaging with people living with dementia
- Module 4: Search and Rescue – Information about searching for a person living with dementia who has gone missing
When you have completed this course you will be able to:
- Define dementia
- Utilize effective communication strategies when interacting with people affected by dementia, including care partners
- Identify a person living with dementia
- Describe common situations involving police officers and people living with dementia
