Basic Security Training - Alberta is a comprehensive training course for individuals seeking to enter this industry. It is designed to increase knowledge about the daily duties and responsibilities of a security professional and build the confidence needed to meet the challenges of the workplace.

This online course is delivered in seven modules and is equivalent to 40 hours of classroom instruction. It covers the following learning areas:

  1. Introduction to the Security Industry (40 minutes)
  2. Canadian Legal System (1.5 hours)
  3. Basic Security Patrol Procedures (2.5 hours)
  4. Communication (1.5 hours)
  5. Documentation and Evidence (1.5 hours)
  6. Emergency Response Procedures (1.5 hours)
  7. Health and Safety (1 hour)

In addition to this training, candidates must also successfully complete a provincially mandated exam delivered in an online format and in a professionally proctored setting. Successfully passing the exam is a requirement to get a private security license in Alberta.

There is no additional fee for the first exam, fees will be applied if you need to rewrite. Choose to take your exam online through eProctor Canada by registering through eProctor Canada's website.  If you would rather an in-person exam, contact PSKN's support desk with up to two-week's notice and include your preferred exam location from the list found below. Once confirmed, the PSKN Support Desk will send you an email.

PSKN will send your exam results (pass or fail) to the Alberta Registrar. This information is a required component of the licensing application process. 

Please note that PSKN is not involved in the licensing application or approval process. Candidates must apply directly to the Alberta Security Programs Department.

Target Audience
This course is designed for individuals who are pursuing a career in Alberta's private security industry. It may also serve as a useful refresher for experienced security professionals.The registration fee to BST - Alberta includes the provincial licensing exam fee.This course is accredited by the Province of Alberta (under SSIA Course License #AT000313) and meets the training requirements outlined in the Security Services and Investigators Act. It is recognized as an Online Alberta Basic Security Training Course (AccBST).

In Alberta, people looking to work in the professional security field, must have completed a Basic Security Training AND successfully passed a provincial exam to receive their private security license.

All exams have to be written with the supervision of an approved proctor and location.

Where to Write Your Exam

eProctor Canada

If you have high-speed internet access and a quiet room in your home, eProctor Canada is a convenient way to write your exam from the comfort of your own home. You will be supervised remotely by a trained and approved proctor all while saving on time and money of traveling to an in-person exam.

BST exams can be written on Tuesdays and Fridays. Visit www.eproctorcanada.com, create an account, and book the next available and convenient time.

Edmonton

Important Details About Exam Day

  • The Exam is delivered online by PSKN, you need your PSKN login information to access the exam.
  • You can register for the exam only after you have finished the Basic Security Training – Alberta online course.
  • The cost of one exam is included in the price of your course registration.
  • In person exams must be booked two weeks in advance.
  • eProctor Canada only requires bookings 2 business days in advance.
  • From time to time, your exam may need to be canceled or rescheduled.
  • You must arrive 15 minutes before the exam start time to check in. As a part of the check in process whether in-person or online, you will need to have valid, government issued, photo ID such as a driver’s license.
  • You have two hours to complete the exam and it is 50 multiple choice questions.
  • A passing grade is 80%. If you do not pass the exam, you can re-write, however, only one free exam is provided with your registration. Exam re-writes will cost $60.00 paid in advance to PSKN.
  • PSKN provides your exam results to the Provincial Registrar. The Alberta Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General will issue an official training certificate to the successful candidates directly.
  • You are encouraged to visit the website of your exam location to make sure you understand the specific policies and procedures they may have.
